A Touareg Heritage Celebration

A legendary Touareg celebration held every year in Djanet on the 10th day of Muharram, bringing together warrior dances, traditional costumes, and the powerful rhythms of Tindé. Officially inscribed on UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List in 2014, it symbolizes peace and the end of ancient conflicts between local tribes.

The Celebration

Dancers and female singers compete in the "Timoulawine" contest. Men face off holding a sword in one hand and a scarf in the other, symbolizing both confrontation and peace. Women form a circle around the warriors, singing to the rhythms of the drum and letting out encouraging ululations.
